Doñana Biological Science Centre


The project is located in Doñana Natural Park. The main focus of the project is the opportunity to reflect on the aesthetic division between art, architecture and landscape. The work thus created becomes an evocative instrument.


The building is placed situated in the middle of the Huerta Tejada to demonstrate that the architecture has a real physical presence and is not only an abstraction or a mental concept. Architecture in this way enhances the magnificent natural setting in which it is placed. The building recalls other isolated object like 'Sun Tunnels'; one of Nancy Holt's land art objects.


Its programme is stretched, punctured through different courtyard, that, on the one hand allow light into the interior and on the other provide rhythm to the facade. include a rithm on the facade.


The central space emphasizes the difference between outside and inside. Being both implies a movement and a participation of the inhabitants The diagonal walkway draws the visitor into a interior (a ¿what? interior, a 'cool dim interior' an interior flooded with light' perhaps).

The structural system is resolved in in-situ cast  reinforced concrete which enhances the building's monolithic form.

School, Burnhaupt-le-Haut

The new school of Burnhaupt-le-Haut employs an innovative environmental approach. It is the first school in Alsace and the second in France to produce more energy than it consumes. The architect Thomas Weulersse of the Studio d-Form was inspired by the German concept of "Passivhaus",where buildings are so energy efficient they need little or no outside energy source.



The facade clad with ceramic panels. Ventilating and insulating in clay constitutes an ideal principle of construction for the insulation and the protection from the external environment.

A durable and effective insulation contributes to the reduction of the consumption of energy for heating and in air conditioning.

The system of double flow ventilation  is associated with a 15kw wood pellet boiler. The very strong insulation in natural and ecological materials is assured by 46 cm walls and 56 cm roof thicknesses in absorbent cellulose cotton and rigid wood wool. Windows are triple glazed and the roof windows are quadruple glazed. Electrical energy production is guaranteed by the implementation incorporation of 280 m2 of photovoltaic panels exposed facing due south.

These factors provide optimum levels of occupant comfort and operational efficiency.


The heating constant building temperature is assured assisted by three sources of energy:
  • the sun, the building are orientated to take advantage of south light and 85% of the south facade consists of big large horizontal glazed  windows,
  • a small wood pellet boiler and
  • the occupants of the school.

The new school of Burnhaupt-le-Haut is the first school with positive energy in Alsace and the second in France. The project joins in an innovative environmental approach. As for the production in electrical energy, it is guaranteed by the implementation of 280 m2 of the photovoltaic panels exposed due south.

That provide optimun levels of occupant comfort and operational efficiency.

The heater is assured by three sources of energy:

  • the sun, the building are orientated to take advantage of south light and 85 % of the south facade consist of big glazed horizontal window,
  • a small boiler wood.

St. Catherine's College Oxford,1959-1964 Arne Jacobsen


In this building, Arne Jacobsen's goal was to convey the traditions that he had encountered when studying Oxford's colleges, reinterpreting their notion and translating them into a modern architectural language idiom

The plan of the building is rectangular and the approach is by crossing a little bridge over the river.



The hexagonal music pavilion, which is brick-built, provides the basic counterpoint to the composition. It's composed of two hexagons, the smaller one is ¿inscribed? in and turned 30 degrees in relation to the larger one.







This building includes an element of symbolism in its composition: the circular lawn which is a reinterpretation of the organization of traditional Oxford's colleges, that are long buildings organized around a square or rectangular quadrangle.







As everybody knows, light is a precious resource in England. The principle source of light in this building is from the exterior. The vertical glazing strips counterbalance the horizontality of the whole building, and enables light to penetrate into the building suffusing it with half-light. This light pours down the walls and spills into the dining-room.  






The supporting walls are replaced by a grid of cruciform reinforced concrete columns  that bear the load of the structure. The frame of columns and beams is filled with non-load bearing masonry to form the exterior walls. The reinforced concrete cruciform columns  hold up high beams of 1.5m depth sideway. This structural strategy eliminates the need for supporting columns across the interior span of 17 meters.

Nantes School of architecture, Lacaton & Vassal


Lacaton & Vassal are a couple of French architects who have introduced a new position in contemporary architecture. The budget is the point of departure for their projects. They prefer to play with the constraints of budget than those of form or function.



Their effort is to make more habitable spaces without increasing the cost. They make an interesting approach to sustainability using traditional solutions and making extra-space, without the expense of high-technology.


 The School of architecture is created by a structure of great capacity, in which the project design comes up with a scheme capable of supporting diverse situations possible in a school of architecture or the city of Nantes. A steel structure ¿divides? the height of these main levels. This enables the space devoted to the program to be generously installed and creates a system adapted to their extension and their future evolution.



I'm not sure but... The grid structure is the counterpoint to the horizontality of the building. The steel columns are the only mediators of this otherwise open and flexible space. The generosity of space allows for future expansion and evolution.

Or from the Smithson's 'As well as the clean lines and large areas of glazing, this frame structure allows internal partitions to be repositioned without undertaking major structural work.'

There are three external floors above the natural ground level, served by a gently sloping external ramp that progressively puts the ground surface of the city in touch with the exterior. The ramps supported by the concrete structure represent a promenade through the building to the top floor that’s totally empty, ready to be appropriated by the users. Sustainability must also include the possibility of having spaces not acclimatized but that maybe can be used when people want and how people want, that’s the meaning of extra-space.

All the spaces are linked to allow many possibility to program, double-height volumes with non-attributed functions New Sentence The transparent facades of which benefit the sun´s rays and originated a semi-acclimatized spaces. 

 Like a pedagogical tool, the project questions the programme and the practices of the school as much as the norms, technologies and its own process of elaboration.'

Antonio Torres Sanz

Lacaton & Vassal are a couple of French architects that’s introducing a new position in contemporary architecture. Their main preoccupation is the relation between the form, function and budget. The newness consist to situated the budget in the first position, also more restrictive that the function. Their effort is to make more habitable space without increase the cost. They make an interesting approximation to sustainability only with traditional solutions and making extra-space, without high-technology.

Teletón Children's Rehabilitation Center. Lambaré, Paraguay _ Solano Benítez

This building was inspired by simple structures and the clear morphology of vernacular architecture.


It started with the demolition of different parts of the building and then, a hydrotherapy pavilion was constructed.

The renovation modernisation and updating of this children's rehabilitation centre was made with the intention of taking advantage of residual materials like ceramic. and vaults of unique geometry. The vaults and the interior claddings were made with self-bearing exposed brick surfaces. with parabolic sections.

(/In the last two sentences you hacve confused information about materials with information about structure which  I have underlined. Therefore there is confusion. How about this...

The renovation of this children's rehabilitation centre was made with the intention of taking advantage of residual materials like ceramic. The vaults and the interior claddings were faced with exposed brick. These vaults are of unique geometry having parabolic sections. The lattice of reinforced concrete recalls the industrial architecture of Pier Luigi Nervi.


The roof of the swimming pool is formed by inverted ceramic pyramids which , and they  rest on concrete pillars. Outside, the pavilion is surrounded by a zig-zagging brick screen.


The glass served for partitions in the preexisting building, which was organized by arranged along a corridor of white masonry walls and glazed roof. (It would have been nice to have a picture of this corridor.)
